The Pred/Prey balance if introducing Zander
While we have a few posts on Zander I would like to ask is what predator/prey balance would be affected by introducing Zander to a fishery. I remember Old Bury hill being the first to introduce Zander into Stillwater/day ticket water. It was a very contentious decision at the time. They were known as basically lethal slashing fish for the fun of it killing at will. The two concerns were one how would they upset the Pred/prey balance but also would they die!
What safety measures would you have to incur because with no template I thought OBH were nuts to introduce such a fish. They hoped that anglers would rush to them in the hundreds to catch one. Well it never really happened
I believe after fishing that main lake for 40 years before and after Zander and it has been destroyed for not just the coarse angler but i think the pike angler too.. Lucky for OBH Carp fishing took off not long after and introducing big carp and opening up carp only lakes saved the fishery i believe.
So. Let’s take a water like Bury hill a mixed good fishery ( before the into of Zander). And say if the owner wanted to introduce zander to their lake. What precautions, plans, and work would be involved to balance out the Pre/prey balance because it is a quite a serious predator!

A suggestion for all the UK
All,

Just a thought.

In England and world wide anglers seek to balance outdoor recreation with conservation as we try to achieve greater self-sufficiency. On one hand, we must manage and protect our natural and cultural resources while we affirm that a culturally diverse set of anglers exists. Above all, we should remember that the outdoors should be a source of joy available to everyone!

You can’t correct something that is inherently wrong by enacting rules. Regardless of the differences we have I cannot in any way justify 4 (FOUR) rods as sporting in any culture. You become “fishermen” not “anglers” at some point - 4 is over the line. Based on your fundamentally wrong 3m rule as a limiting factor and subsequent discussion I propose for the following:

How about adopting a concept of having 3 sets of licenses? One for Basic Angler – Carp Angler - Advanced or Master Angler. The latter having had a chance to gain proficiency using different types of fishing equipment and techniques. You would be eligible for an “advanced license” after “X” years. Maybe "carp angler" could be restricted to commercials?

You have that opportunity to make National rules since you have "national" licenses under one authority. We do not, we have a hodge-podge of licenses and regulations..

How’s that for “knowing” what you should do? We all know best for the other guy, don’t we? Of course, I am perfect.

Shelter or brolly
I have just bought a JRC 60" brolly and at pretty much the same time unexpectedly won a JRC STI pram hood shelter so I have been wondering which to keep.
Well they have just arrived and so I put them both up side by side in the garden for comparison and I thought my observations might be of interest to anyone thinking about buying something similar.

The brolly came from Ebay UK. It is in very good condition. It was described as having been used no more than three times. Hmmmm rolleyes.gif

The STI was brand new in the box. Although bought on French Ebay it came from a German dealer.

Advantages of the brolly:

Quick to erect and take down
Easy to pack into its bag
Small footprint so may be better for tight swims
Better than a standard brolly

Disadvantages of the brolly:

Heavy and long when packed away
Limited space toward the back where you bang your head against the ribs or centre boss.
Low in the front so feels slightly claustrophobic when sitting on a standard chair (Korum)
Feels a bit wobbly even when pegged down
Would be tight for space with a bed chair.

Advantages of the STI

Very easy to put up and take down
Spacious
Feels rock solid even with just 2 or 3 pegs in place
Lighter and shorter than the brolly when packed away
Has a real quality "feel"
Plenty of space for a bedchair and with a front on it would be very comfortable for longer sessions
Higher in the front and less claustrophobic, particularly if you tie back the front rib

Disadvantages of the STI

What a pain to get it back into its bag
Otherwise none that I have found - yet

It is true that I haven't used either brolly in anger but after having a play I would recommend the STI over the oval brolly without reservation.
Now that JRC have introduced a two rib design for 2012 the perfectly serviceable 3 rib design is for sale at several outlets for the same or less than the oval brolly and at that price it is a bargain (I paid 60 quid for mine biggrin.gif)
