Description

The Oaks Lakes, Sessay were opened in 1994. We originally opened with 1 lake; Willows. In 1996 we added the Oaks and Firs Lakes , followed in 1998, by Alders Lake ; this was soon followed by Poplars Lake , Maple Lake and the newly opened Cedar Lake (opened in November 2003). There are 4 main match lakes at The Oaks; Cedar (matches only), Poplar, Maple and Alders. The other 3 lakes, Firs, Oaks and Willows are always open to allow pleasure fishing. Pleasure fishing can also take place on Poplars, Maple and Alders providing that no matches are taking place. There is a notice to the entrance to the fishery providing information about which lakes have matches booked/taking place. As well as 7 lakes we also have a Tackle Shop and a Café, that are open 7 days a week.

Details

The Alders Lake
The Alders lake was opened in 1998 to cater for the ever growing match scene. The lake has a central island some 13 - 18 metres away and averages 5 feet deep. The lake is established with trees growing from the reed fringed central island. The lake holds Carp to 12lb, Chub, Roach, Perch, Rudd, Tench, Bream, Ide, Gudgeon, Barbel, Golden Tench and Golden Orfe. The lake holds 41 pegs. Match bookings are taken on the Alders Lake. Floating baits can be fished on Alders Lake. Popular methods are maggot during the colder months with a bit of corn across to the central island. In spring fish maggots, caster, chopped worm up in the water for the ide and roach or fish pellets, meat or corn across to the island for carp. In summer, fish shallow spraying bait (maggot, caster, pellets) also put in a few floating pellets and fish a pellet 6" deep. The lake match record currently stands at 147lbs. Average match weights of 50-80lb made up of ide carp and barbel are regularly achieved.

The Cedar Lake
The Cedar Lake is a purpose built match lake accommodating 80 anglers, all fishing to one large central island. The lake was opened in November 2003 and regularly holds 80 peg open matches. Matches are currently held on Thursdays and Saturdays. The depth of the lake averages 5 - 6 feet deep. As with the Maple lake there is a shelf on the island of approx 12 - 18" deep. The lake is stocked with F1 Carp up to 4lb, Mirror, Common, Ghost Carp, Ide, Bream and Barbel to 6lb. The Cedar Lake was used for the 2004 Angling Times/Sensas Premier League Individual Final. The match was won with 114lb and 100lb was second, all 6 ten peg sections were won with over 60lb. This lake also used for the Fish 'O' Mania qualifiers. Methods that have worked so far on The Cedar Lake are fishing pellet up the slope, at your feet and on top of the far shelf, feeding either a sloppy groundbait, groundbait or micro pellets. Maggots worked during the colder months. The current match record stands at 211lb 12oz held by Chris Hall. 150lbs plus bags regularly win open matches during the summer months.

The Firs Lake
The Firs is an established reed fringed lake which is surrounded by trees on all sides. The lake is also set down a little bit lower than all the other lakes and benefits from being less prone to any wind. The lake holds Carp to 15lb, Tench, Bream, Roach, Gudgeon, Perch, Barbel, Ide and Chub. There is a small outcrop of land that can be accessed and fished from, with space for 25 anglers. The lake has a maximum depth of 5 feet. Floating baits can be fished on the Firs Lake. Popular methods are maggot during the colder months. In spring fish maggots, pellets, meat or corn just into the deeper water in front off you. In summer, fish shallow spraying pellets also put in a few floating pellets and fish a pellet 6" deep. Cat meat and pellets size pieces of cat meat also work well. Paste is also worth a try from spring onwards. It is also worth fishing a floating dog biscuit and feed floating pellets. Possible catches approaching 200lb can be had off this lake. No match bookings - Pleasure Angling Only.

The Maple Lake
The Maple lake was a purpose built match lake allowing 68 fishable pegs, all fishing to a central island with the exception of pegs 55, 62A, 63A and 66. The depth of the lake averages 5 feet deep. At about 11 - 12 metres, there is an underwater shelf where you will find 18" - 2 feet depth. This lake is stocked primarily with Carp in the 8oz to 5lb range, there are also bonus Carp to 10lb in the lake. Along with the Carp there are Roach, Rudd, Tench, Barbel, Ide and Gudgeon. Match bookings are taken on the Maple Lake. Popular methods are maggot during the colder months with a bit of corn across to the central island and also down the middle. In spring fish maggots, pellets, meat or corn across to the island over a sprinkling of groundbait. In summer, pellet across to the island. It is also possible to catch by spraying pellets at 2/3 of the way and fishing 1 foot deep. Cat meat down the track and pellets size pieces of cat meat across to the island also work well. If you are missing bites on the cat meat, try a pellet or a grain of corn over the top. The lake match record currently stands at 164lbs 6oz caught from peg 64, made up of carp to 4lb. The method was feeding caster and fishing pellet across to the island and paste the middle. This lake will be used for the Fish 'O' Mania qualifiers.

The Oaks Lake
The Oaks lake is approximately 6 feet deep with a large central island. The lake shelves off to the bottom of the near slope some 3 metres out. Being one of the established lakes, the lake is reed fringed. The lake holds Carp to 12lb, Bream, Tench, Rudd, Perch, Roach, Ide, Gudgeon, Barbel, Crucian Carp, Golden Tench and Golden Orfe. This lake can accommodate 35 anglers. Floating baits can be fished on The Oaks Lake. Popular methods are maggot during the colder months with a bit of corn in the deeper water. In spring fish maggots, caster, pellets, meat or corn down the middle over a sprinkling of groundbait. In summer, fish shallow spraying bait (maggot, caster, pellets) also put in a few floating pellets and fish a pellet 6" deep. Cat meat cubes and pellets size pieces of cat meat score well on this lake fishing at depth. In summer a weight of 100lb is achievable. No match bookings - Pleasure Angling Only

The Poplars Lake
The Poplars : The poplars lake was opened in 1999. There are 55 pegs available on the Poplars lake. There is a central island approximately 13 – 14 metres away. The lake was designed to allow most people with the average length pole to be able to reach the central island. The island is reed fringed with small trees and bushes steadily growing. The lake averages 5 feet deep down the middle and approximately 2 feet deep across to the island. The lake holds, Carp to 9lb, Tench, Ide, Barbel, Roach, Perch, Rudd and. Match bookings are taken on the Poplars lake. Floating baits can be fished on the Poplars Lake. Popular methods are maggot during the colder months with a bit of corn across to the central island. In spring fish maggots, caster, chop worm up in the water for the ide or fish pellets, meat or corn across to the island. In summer, fish shallow spraying bait (maggot, caster, pellets) also put in a few floating pellets and fish a pellet 6” deep. Cat meat down the track and pellets size pieces of cat meat across to the island also work well. The lake match record currently stands at 154lbs.

The Willows Lake
The Willows is the specimen lake at The Oaks Lakes complex. The lake is approximately 7 feet deep with a central island. There are Grass Carp to 25lb, Ghost carp to 26lb and Common/Mirror Carp to 28lb. In 2003, The Willows lake was extended and more islands were added allowing easier fishing for pleasure anglers. The lake also holds Roach, Bream, Tench, Perch, Ide and Barbel. The Willows lake can accommodate 30 anglers. Floating baits can be fished on The Willows Lake. Popular methods are single hook baits during the colder months i.e. corn, maggot clips or boilies. In Spring fish pellets or boilies with small PVA bags. In Summer pellets and boilies with large PVA bags or spodding works well. It is also worth trying a floating dog biscuit or large floating pellet for the carp off the top. Full cubes of Cat meat or luncheon meat also work on this lake. Boilies are used by the majority of the specimen anglers. No match bookings - Pleasure Angling Only.

The Ash, Beech and Sycamore Lakes
The Ash, Beech and Sycamore lakes are the new editions to the Oaks Lakes complex. Rather than more snake type lakes, the new lakes are of an open water design. 40 meters wide and fished from both sides. The features of the lakes are under water. A 60cm ledge for fishing down the edge followed by a slope to a 1.7m depth at 4m out followed by a flat area to 10m out where it shallows back up to 90cm.

The lakes are filled with thousands of common and mirror carp plus F1's, Ide and Barbel. The carp are only of a small stamp but should average over 1lb by July 2010. However there are others to 3lb. 3 car parks have also been constructed for ease of access and to shorten walks with heavy tackle. Ash, Beech and Sycamore are for match use only. No pleasure fishing is allowed. Current matches are held on Sundays. £18 draw at 9:30am fishing 10:30am - 4:00pm.

Fished 'Oaks' lake, nice carp, chub, tench, bream, and silvers Good day

oliver george

Fished here twice within the last year and did quite well. Went with my dads mate and he was on the pole with casters and paste I think and he pulled in quite a few carp, I was using top few sections off my pole with maggots to start off with and was catching few skimmers roach and perch so started using feeder and pulled in a few f1s. All in all great venue and would recommend to all

Typical commercial fishery

Sam Hubbard

The best way to fish this place is for the silvers as there are some real clonkers that feed on all the pellets etc...

Tips
